The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway in North Devon was, perhaps, the best known and best loved of the English public narrow gauge railways. It was opened in 1898, taken over by the Southern Railway at the 'Grouping' in 1923, and closed in 1935. In 2004 a short section of the railway was reopened from Woody Bay station, extended to just over a mile two years later.
The Bristol Wagon & Carriage Works provided 16 coaches, of six different types, for the opening of the line, and they were regarded as some of the finest on any British public narrow gauge line.
